Heath and Ethan Greene – Father Son Fishing ABT Championship at Eufaula
Nothing brings nostalgic thoughts to the mind like the image of a father and son fishing together. If you took a moment to speak to just about any dedicated angler today, you would likely hear that they learned to love fishing by going with their father.
Heath and Ethan Greene are the perfect representation of that image. They are one of the first parent / child teams to qualify for the Alabama Bass Trail Championship, and they did it on their home lake in Eufaula.
Heath, who shared his love of fishing from his father, shared that passion with his 14-year-old son Ethan. “When I was growing up, my momma was at the church every time the doors were open, and my father fished as much,” he said. “The only time I didn’t have to go to church was when I went fishing with Daddy; so I went a lot, and learned to love it; Heath comes by his love of fishing naturally I guess.”
The elder Greene said that they fished their first tournament together when his son was young. “I didn’t think it would go well, and expected to leave the lake early; but that didn’t happen, he fished all day,” said Mr. Greene. “He matched me cast for cast and wanted to fish more after – he’s wanted to do it for a living since.”
They fished the inaugural Alabama Bass Trail season together, but work schedules forced them to take last year off. When they saw the championship was going to be on their home lake; they made sure to work it out. “We had to fish this event,” he said. “There’s a lot of people in town who know him who would love to see him fishing in the event, so we did everything we could to be here.”
Ever the proud father, Mr. Greene said that he loves the Alabama Bass Trail because it will be a factor in helping his son progress in what he wants to do. “He decided early on that he wanted to fish for a living, and the quality of the field in this circuit really stretches an angler,” he said. “He went to the B.A.S.S. Nation High School series National Championship event last year, and did pretty well finishing in the 40’s. I know the competition in this trail have been a big part of helping him grow.
“Aside from that, I get to do something I love a lot throughout the year – fish tournaments with my son.”
