The Lolley Brothers
ABT Championship Preview
by Dan O’Sullivan
Every time the Lolley brothers of Hayden, Ala. came across the Northern Division stage in 2016, Alabama Bass Trail emcee Robbie Floyd would mimic the 1985 Doug E Fresh / Slick Rick B Side song “La Di Da Di” and say “Lolley Lolley, we like to party”
If you asked Davy and Shawn Lolley, they’d just tell you that they love to fish.
Having fished many tournaments, the pair of brothers had heard many stories about how well Alabama Bass Trail was run, and they knew the completion level in the circuit, they decided it was time to fish it in 2016. “We respect the way things are done there, and knew the level of competition, so we wanted to test ourselves,” they said. “Everything we heard was right; we are enjoying it, and are thrilled to have finished where we did and rank qualifying for this championship in a couple weeks as one of our career highlights.”
The brothers have spent one weekend preparing for the October 7 – 8 event on Lake Eufaula, and said that they didn’t find anything special, but are still looking forward to the event. “It’s a lot like Guntersville, which we seem to fish pretty well,” they said. “We don’t have near the amount of experience on Eufaula as a lot of other teams do, but it’s so much like Guntersville, that we feel like we’ll be able to put something together in the three practice days prior to the tournament.”
The brothers, who just finished their first ABT season by qualifying fourth in the Northern Division points, said that fishing has been a part of their lives since they were very young, and that tournament fishing has been a part of their lives for nearly 30 years. “We grew up fishing Smith Lake, and we fished tournaments very early,” they said. “Our dad sold fishing tackle for nearly 20 years, so I can’t think of a time when fishing wasn’t a part of our lives.”
The sport is so much a part of their lives that they both work with the Hayden High School Fishing team, and have children on the team. Davy is a coach of the team, and his daughter competes on it, while Shawn is the Tournament Director and his son also competes for Hayden. “Fishing is a part of our family’s makeup,” they said. “We love it, and look forward to fishing every chance we get; the ABT Championship at Eufaula will be no different.”
